First Visit
At Weaver and Stratton Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we are delighted to welcome both you and your child to our office. We take pride in creating an experience where your child will feel comfortable and at ease. Whether this is your child’s first-ever dental appointment or their first visit to our office, our team is skilled in the practice of easing your child’s mind and making them smile when they come to see us!
Below, you will find some helpful information regarding the first visit and what you can do to prepare your child for this appointment. If you have any questions, please give our team a call!
What To Expect
In most cases, we like to keep your child’s first appointment quick and easy. This time is all about getting to know them and helping them feel comfortable with dentistry! We will check your child’s teeth for placement and health, show them our dental instruments and perform a cleaning if necessary. If we discover the presence of decay or gum disease, we can set an appointment for treatment at a later date.
We recommend that your child visit us before their first birthday; free examinations are available for every patient below 18 months of age! By bringing your child to our office at an early age, we are able to build their confidence with dental care and prevent most problems before they develop.
At the end of the first visit, both you and your child will be supplied with information and resources to enhance your child’s teeth and gum health. We will take the time to answer any of your questions or address concerns as well. To ensure your child ends their appointment with a bright, happy smile, we will supply them with a goodie bag filled with dental products to enhance the cleaning routine at home!
How To Prepare
When it’s time to schedule your child’s first dental appointment, it’s essential that you begin preparing your child for the visit at home. Depending on your child’s age, have a conversation with them about the appointment and tell them what the dentist does! Maintain a joyful smile and positive attitude despite any concerns your child mentions. It’s important to show them that there is nothing to fear about an appointment with us; in fact, they will enjoy a cleaner, healthier smile by completing their visit! You can also try the following ideas:
- Show them pictures of our office.
- Tell them about each of our team members.
- Play a game of dentist and role-play the appointment.
- Read a children’s book about dental appointments.
If your child remains nervous about the appointment, rest assured that our professionals are trained in working with children and know how to calm anxious minds. We have a passion for the job and are beyond excited to transform your child’s thoughts about dental care and make the experience exciting for them! If desired, we do allow parents to accompany children to the treatment room.

Information for Infants & Toddlers
At Weaver and Stratton Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we care about your child’s oral health and want them to have the best dental experience possible. You should begin by providing proper care for your infant or toddler’s teeth and gums at home. This guarantees them the best chance at having a healthy smile for life and a well-maintained hygiene routine as they age.
We welcome you to review our guide below for information regarding the proper care of infant and toddler oral health. If you have any questions, contact our office today!
Caring for Your Child’s Gums
Taking proper care of your child’s oral health starts even before they have their first tooth. By keeping their gums clean and healthy, you can avoid the development of irritation or gum disease.
Clean your child’s mouth gently with a soft moist cloth or gauze pad. It is important that you use a fresh area of the cloth each time; using the same dirty cloth can contaminate the area you are cleaning. Also, be careful about cleaning your child’s mouth if you have sharp fingernails; this could scratch the delicate gum tissue.
Your Baby’s First Tooth
You will notice your baby getting their first tooth when they are about six to twelve months old. This is an exciting time for both you and your child. You will want to do everything you can to keep that tooth healthy, which means cleaning it every day until more teeth start coming in. The best way to clean a baby’s first tooth is with a baby toothbrush dipped in clean water.
Baby toothbrushes come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. Look for a soft bristle brush that has a small head, so it can comfortably fit in their mouth. If your baby has a poor reaction to the new toothbrush, switch back to using the gauze and washcloth for a few months before trying again.
It’s important to be patient with this transition, to encourage a healthy relationship with dentistry from the beginning.
Brushing with Toothpaste
Once a few more teeth begin to emerge, it’s time to begin using toothpaste. There are many options and flavors available, but it’s important to pick a product that does not include fluoride. While babies are still learning about their oral hygiene routine, they may attempt to swallow the toothpaste. Since ingesting fluoride can be harmful, you should only use fluoride-free toothpaste until they can spit it out.
Avoiding Cavities
Cavities are the most common chronic childhood disease. They develop when bacteria in plaque use sugar from food and drink to make acids that attack teeth. A build-up of plaque along with the sugars can also lead to gingivitis and periodontal (gum) disease, which can be harmful to a child’s oral and overall health.
Any food or drink that contains sugars (even naturally occurring fruits) can raise the risk for tooth decay. That includes juice, soda, cookies, cakes, candy, and ice cream. However, you don’t need to worry if your child has had these foods in moderation; what matters is how often and how long the food remains on the teeth.
Parents play an important role in preventing tooth decay, and you can prevent cavities from occurring by following the below guidelines:
- Don’t let your child go to bed with a bottle filled with anything, including juice or milk. If you do, clean the teeth thoroughly before bedtime.
- Avoid sticky foods like dried fruit or candies that can stick to teeth and gums.
- Keep candy out of reach. It’s best to limit it to special occasions, after the first birthday.
- Have your child’s teeth checked every six months at our office.
- Clean your child’s teeth after each meal, or at least twice a day.
If you have questions about caring for your child’s teeth, contact our office and we will be happy to help!
First Visit to the Dentist
Your baby should visit our office within six months of their first tooth emerging. This gives us time to provide feedback, examine their teeth and gums, and catch any problems before they become more serious. In addition, by bringing your child to us as early as possible, they can become more adapted to the dental care process and more comfortable in our office.
By bringing your child before 18 months of age, they are eligible for a free examination.
Infant Oral Health & Setting a Good Example
During a child’s early years, they are susceptible to observing the world around them and mimicking behaviors, words, and actions. This can be used to your advantage when teaching them about dentistry! A great way to instill healthy dental habits for your child is to have them watch you care for your teeth. Allow them to observe how you brush and floss and tell them how exciting and beneficial the process is! Afterward, encourage them to give it a try themselves.
Children lack the ability to properly clean their teeth until they are between the ages of six and eight, so they will require help until then. Make sure you do your part to help them brush and floss; you can also encourage this activity by allowing them to pick their own toothbrush, toothpaste, and colorful flossers!
What Is Normal Thumb-Sucking Behavior?
Thumb-sucking is a natural behavior that children tend to rely on for comfort; this activity can continue until the ages of two or four. While during this time it is considered normal, it’s encouraged to begin attempting to break the child of the habit by giving them other activities to do with their hands or bringing them another source of comfort (stuffed animal, blanket, etc).
Many children grow out of this behavior on their own over time; however, if you find that your child is still sucking their thumb once they get older or is experiencing problems with their teeth, call our office for a visit and learn how you can support them in breaking this habit.
How Can I Help My Child Quit Thumb-Sucking?
- Always be supportive and do not punish your child. Simply offer praise when they do not suck their thumb.
- Encourage them to get creative with crafts or toys that keep their hands busy.
- Offer gentle reminders if you see them sucking their thumb.
- Inform them what can happen to their teeth if they continue participating in the behavior.

Emergency Dentistry
Emergency dental situations can occur at any time, so we want to make sure you’re prepared! At Weaver and Stratton Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, our team is prepared to handle a variety of urgent dental situations and get your child on the path to smiling again. While we realize that these emergencies can be scary, traumatic, and stressful to you as a parent, it’s important that you don’t escalate your child’s fear by panicking. Instead, see below our guide on managing dental emergencies and what steps to take to produce the best outcome.
Bitten Lip or Tongue
If your child has suffered a bitten lip or tongue, instruct them to swish their mouth with warm water. If the injury is bleeding, call our office for further instruction based on the severity of the injury.
In the meantime, a cold compress can be used on the outside of the cheek or the lip to reduce pain and swelling.
Broken, Chipped, or Fractured Tooth
Instruct your child to rinse their mouth with warm water to remove any debris or tooth fragments. Apply a cold compress to the outer cheek to relieve swelling and pain.
Broken Jaw
If you suspect that your child has broken their jaw, it’s important to act immediately by bringing your child to a hospital. These types of injuries can occur due to direct collisions while playing sports, car accidents, or other impacts to the face. Place an ice pack on your child’s jaw and instruct them to restrict the movement of their mouth.
Orthodontic Emergencies
If your child’s orthodontic appliance has broken or become loose, simply call our office to schedule an appointment for repairs. If you already have an appointment scheduled, give us a call before arriving so that we know the repair is needed.
Loose, Poking, or Broken Braces Wire
Loose wires can be very uncomfortable and cause irritation to your child’s gum tissue. If your child’s orthodontic appliance has a loose wire, call our office to schedule an appointment for the wire to be fixed. In the meantime, you can use dental wax to reduce any discomfort caused by the wire.
Loose/Broken Braces Bracket
If an orthodontic appliance has a loose or broken bracket, call our office to schedule repairs. If the bracket is still attached to the wire, place wax over it to alleviate discomfort. If the bracket has fallen off, bring it to the repair appointment.
Object Caught Between Teeth
Objects caught between the teeth can be very uncomfortable and over time may lead to decay or gum recession. To loosen the object, instruct your child to swish their mouth with warm salted water. Afterward, use dental floss to remove the stuck object.
If you or your child are unable to remove the object, call our office to schedule an appointment. It’s important that neither you nor your child attempt to use sharp objects (needles, forks, etc) to remove the object; this can cause damage to the gum tissue.
Knocked-Out Tooth
- Permanent tooth – If your child has knocked out a permanent tooth, it’s important for you to act quickly to ensure the tooth can be saved. First, locate the tooth and pick it up by the crown (avoid touching the tooth root). Rinse the tooth with plain water and attempt to reinsert it into the tooth socket. Once reinserted, instruct your child to bite down on a clean cloth to hold the tooth in place. If you are unable to put the tooth back in the socket, place it in a clean container of milk. In either case, call our office immediately and visit the nearest hospital.
- Primary tooth – A primary tooth that is knocked out does not need to be replaced. However, it is important that your child visit us to ensure the gum tissue has not suffered any injuries and no fragments of the tooth remain in the socket. Depending on your child’s age, we may take an x-ray to determine the development of the permanent tooth. If it appears that the permanent tooth will not emerge for some time, we may suggest a space maintainer to prevent neighboring teeth from shifting into the open space.
Toothache
If your child is suffering from a toothache, contact our office to determine if treatment is needed. Instruct your child to rinse their mouth with warm salted water; salt is able to draw impurities from the gum tissue that may be responsible for inflammation or irritation. Apply a cold compress to the cheek to relieve pain and swelling; you can also provide your child with oral pain relievers.
Do not attempt to use topical treatment as this may damage the gum tissue!
Avoiding Injury to Your Child’s Teeth
Our best recommendation to parents is to attempt to prevent dental emergencies before they occur. By taking the following preventative measures, you may be able to prevent these stressful situations:
- Provide your child with a professional athletic mouthguard for playing sports and participating in high-energy activities.
- Ensure your child knows how to properly care for orthodontic devices by gently brushing and using the proper floss for cleaning around wires.
- Make sure younger children use a car seat and older children always wear a seatbelt.
- Attend all scheduled dental cleanings and follow feedback or treatment suggestions provided in our office.
Soreness/Discomfort
Soreness and discomfort are common occurrences when children first have their braces applied or their wires tightened. This pain can be alleviated by a cold compress, oral pain reliever, or wax application to the brackets or wires. The discomfort will subside within a few days.
If your child is still experiencing pain after three days, call our office for further guidance.
Relief For Children & Peace For Parents
At Weaver and Stratton Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, our office is ready to handle your child’s dental emergency. This brings your child much-needed relief and comfort, and as a parent, you get peace of mind – knowing your child is in capable hands! Our practice believes that children come first and we make their comfort and health our top priorities; when they have suffered a dental emergency, we can assure you that they will receive our direct attention and focus.
Working together as a team, we will rapidly form the best treatment plan that brings them relief from pain and stress, while achieving the best possible outcome. Now parents can finally breathe a sigh of relief, knowing their child will be okay. Call our office if your child is experiencing a dental emergency!
