    Tongue & Lip-tie Release Exercises

    Tongue Tie Release:

    • Goal: Increase tongue strength, flexibility, mobility and prevent a tight reattachment. Encourage your child to move the tongue in different directions, but the most important direction is up towards the roof of the mouth.
    • Stretching Exercises: Start tomorrow! Use clean fingers: With one hand press and hold the lower jaw open and with the other hand use firm pressure to gently push down into the floor of the mouth and then up to lift the tongue. Aim to vertically open the “diamond” shape and lengthen the tissue. It is common to see some slight bleeding.
    • Frequency: 4-6 times a day for 4 weeks.

    Lip-Tie Release:

    • Goal: Improve lip mobility, flexibility and healing.
    • Stretching: Start tomorrow! Gently pull the lip up to press against the nose. Massage the area to keep the “diamond” open. Expect slight bleeding. This is normal.
    • Frequency: 4-6 times a day for 4 weeks.

    Healing & Wound Management

    • Appearance of wound area: A wet, white/yellow scab forms. This does not indicate infection. The scab will shrink daily but continue stretching to avoid reattachment.
    • Diet: Milk (depending on age), Soft foods (especially cold food)
    • Pain Relief: Motrin, Tylenol, Hypericum, or Arnica may be needed for the first few days. Ice packs under the chin can be beneficial
    • Swelling: Minimal, but some swelling may be temporarily noticed. This is normal.

    Follow Up

    • Please return within 7-10 days so we can assess the healing process and reduce the need for future treatment.
    • Healing time: Healing in the mouth occurs quickly which is why post-op wound management is important. Complete healing typically occurs within 2 weeks, but improvements can still be made with continued after care.
    • Continue treatments with speech therapists and myofunctional therapists.
    • Consider bodywork with a chiropractor and/or craniosacral therapist.
  • Tongue Tie/Lip-Tie

Tongue and lip-ties are common conditions that can affect children from birth, often initially leading to challenges with breastfeeding and/or bottle feeding. As children grow, these restrictive tissues may contribute to issues such as difficulty transitioning to solid foods, delayed or altered speech development, improper breathing, swallowing difficulties, dental decay, and/or dental crowding. These restrictive tissues do not go away over time, rather patients learn to compensate to mask their symptoms. Without treatment, the adverse effects of tongue and lip ties can follow a child into adolescents and adulthood, potentially causing headaches, neck and shoulder pain, and sleep disturbances. Addressing these ties early may prevent future complications and improve overall health.

If you suspect that your child has a tongue tie or lip-tie, contact our Atlantic Boulevard office to schedule an evaluation with Dr. Paul Lambert. Meet The Doctors – Weaver And Stratton Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics With over 7 years of evaluating and treating tethered oral tissues, Dr. Paul ensures a precise procedure that promotes faster healing and recovery. Frenectomy Procedures

A frenectomy is a quick, in-office procedure performed with a state-of-the-art CO2 LightScalpel laser that releases restrictive oral tissues, enabling your child’s tongue and/or lips to move freely.

Why should I choose a frenectomy for my child?

Infants with tongue and lip-ties may:

    • Have difficulty nursing or is painful for mom
    • Have difficulty taking a bottle
    • Drip milk out of their mouth when eating
    • Have trouble gaining weight
    • Click their tongue or smack their lips when eating
    • Be continually fussy, have gas or acid reflux

Older children with tongue and lip-ties may:

    • Have trouble sleeping
    • Experience a strong gag reflex
    • Have delayed speech and articulating sounds
    • Speak softer than average or difficulty being understood
    • Choke when eating or drinking
    • Have food or texture issues
    • Be a picky eater or eat their food slowly
    • Sleep with their mouth open, snore, and/or grind their teeth

    CO2 Laser FAQ

The CO2 LightScalpel laser is a highly advanced surgical laser that uses carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce a concentrated beam of light energy. This energy is absorbed by water molecules in the soft tissue, allowing precise cutting and vaporization of tissue with minimal impact on surrounding areas. Unlike traditional surgical tools, it simultaneously cuts and coagulates, which reduces bleeding and minimizes tissue trauma. It is widely recognized for its efficacy in oral surgeries, including tongue tie and lip-tie release (frenectomy) procedures.

Compared to conventional surgical methods like scissors, scalpels, or diode lasers, the CO2 LightScalpel laser offers several key advantages and is the gold standard for frenectomy procedures for infants. Here’s why:

    • Precision: The laser enables unmatched accuracy in targeting the exact tissue to be released, preserving surrounding healthy tissue.
    • Reduced Pain: The laser’s ability to seal nerve endings and blood vessels during the procedure minimizes pain during and after surgery.
    • Minimal Bleeding: Its simultaneous cutting and coagulation properties reduce intraoperative bleeding, providing a cleaner surgical field.
    • Faster Procedure: The enhanced control can often reduce the need for sutures, making the process quicker for both the patient and practitioner.
    • Lower Risk of Infection: The laser sterilizes as it cuts, reducing the likelihood of post-procedure infections.

he LightScalpel laser uses a specific wavelength of CO2 light energy (10,600 nm) that is highly absorbed by water molecules in soft tissue. When directed at the tissue:

    • Cutting Action: The energy vaporizes the water in the cells, effectively cutting through tissue with unparalleled precision.
    • Coagulation: Simultaneously, the laser seals blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerve endings, significantly reducing bleeding, swelling, and pain.
    • Sterilization: The heat from the laser sterilizes the surgical site, reducing the risk of infection.

The LightScalpel laser significantly improves healing time due to its tissue-sparing and precision capabilities:

    • Minimal Trauma: Because the laser minimizes collateral damage to surrounding tissue, the body experiences less inflammation, speeding up the recovery process.
    • Reduced Swelling: By sealing lymphatic vessels, the laser prevents excess fluid buildup, leading to less post-operative swelling.
    • Less Scarring: The controlled energy minimizes tissue tearing or excessive cell damage, reducing the likelihood of noticeable scarring.
    • Comfortable Healing: With sealed nerve endings, post-operative discomfort is lower, allowing patients (even infants) to resume normal feeding or other activities quickly.
    • Lower Risk of Complications: The sterilizing effect of the laser decreases the chance of infections, contributing to smoother recovery.

  • Sedation Dentistry

Here at Weaver and Stratton Pediatric Dentistry, we believe that every child deserves a fun and enjoyable dental experience. In order to establish a healthy relationship with dental care from a young age, it is extremely important to create positive experiences and associations early on that will allow children to cultivate healthy dental habits throughout their lives. Part of the process for ensuring these positive experiences is to present an environment that cultivates kindness, care, comfort, and control – providing your child with a sense of relaxation rather than anxiety.

Our team makes it a priority to ensure that each child feels comfortable in our office, though we realize some children may be nervous and need help warming up to their dental appointments; that’s why we offer dental sedation! With dental sedation, children are provided with medications that help to manage anxiety and depress certain nerve receptors (this includes calming the gag reflex and relieving sensory stimulation). Aiding children in becoming more comfortable in the dental office helps to establish a more positive relationship with dentistry – thus, leading children to better care for their smiles in the future.

If your child is feeling nervous about their upcoming dental visit or has special needs that may need extra attention, please read below to learn more about our sedative options. If you have any questions, give our office a call!

    IV Sedation

IV sedation is a sedative administered directly into the bloodstream to produce a quick calming effect. We will deliver this medication into a vein located along your child’s arm or hand. Often reserved as a more powerful form of sedation than nitrous oxide, the use of this form of sedation is designed to ease your child through a more lengthy treatment, keeping them relaxed and comfortable throughout their entire appointment.

Our providers maintain precise control of the sedative your child receives throughout their visit – ensuring they receive the proper dosage to feel completely comfortable throughout the treatment duration. While IV sedation is considered a conscious sedative, your child will likely feel as if they slept through their procedure and retain no memory of the visit.

    Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a form of sedative that is administered as a gas inhaled through the nasal passages. During your child’s appointment, we will attach a small mask to their nose, where the gas will quickly begin producing a calming effect. The gas helps to eliminate any feelings of fear or anxiety, while also keeping your child responsive – capable of following instructions or answering questions during their procedure.

    Advocates For Your Child’s Comfort

At Weaver and Stratton Pediatric Dentistry, our providers are always looking out for your child’s wellness and comfort. Establishing our primary objective as expert dental care professionals, we also aim our focus towards keeping children in control. What that means is we take great care in recognizing stress signals and reacting to them accordingly; this may include performing services at a slower pace to accommodate the child, talking your child through our processes to keep them aware of what’s happening, and recommending sedation in necessary cases.

Overall, we do everything we can to advocate for your child’s care and comfort. By doing this, we can only hope they are able to build confidence in the dental office, and eventually see the space as a safe environment to thrive and grow!
