  • Special Needs Dentistry

Here at Weaver and Stratton Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, our team of specialists have extensive experience and training to provide children with special needs the utmost care. We specialize in working with children of all ages, and our pediatric dental specialists are able to establish a rapport with each child. We do this by listening to the child, learning about them, and always being sensitive to their comfort level. When working with children that have special needs, this is especially important as it keeps them feeling safe and introduces them to dental care at a pace they can manage.

If you have a child with special needs or oral sensory issues, please take the time to inform our team members about your child’s needs during their first visit, as we will be making our best efforts to ensure that they receive the quality dental care they deserve. Call our office today if you have any questions or would like to book an appointment!

Why Choose a Pediatric Dentist for Children with Special Needs?

When introducing your child to dental care, finding the right dentist is essential. This helps to promote the idea of dentistry as a positive and joyful experience, rather than something scary. The majority of general dentists aren’t trained to handle oral sensory issues or disabilities and treat every child the same way. At our practice, we understand that every child is different and have specialized training in treating children with mental and physical disabilities, as well as sensory or emotional challenges.

Below, we would like to share with you more about the pediatric dental profession and why our specialists can offer the best care for your child!

    • As a part of their education, a pediatric dentist actually receives at least two extra years of training in an accredited dental school beyond what is required to become a general dentist; this enables them to meet the needs of all children and better care for their smiles.
    • Having this specialty training equips pediatric dentists with the extra knowledge and skills necessary to provide the best care possible to children with special needs.
    • Overall, pediatric dentists are dental care professionals that have a passion for working directly with kids and teens. Their passion for this profession grants them the ability to better connect with the child behind every smile.

Our pediatric dentists can accommodate the needs of many special needs children in our practice; this is including but is not limited to:

    • Sensory disabilities and oral hypersensitivity (extreme sensitivity and aversion to touch).
    • Feeding disorders and medically compromised children, including those on intravenous medication and oxygen therapy.
    • Physical disabilities and neuromuscular disorders that may affect a child’s ability to reach their mouth, hold a toothbrush, or rinse and spit.
    • Developmental delays and behaviors such as autism spectrum disorders, hyperactivity, lack of cooperation, or trouble with speech or hearing can make it difficult for a child to cooperate and comply with good dental hygiene.
    • Dental trauma (injury to the teeth, gums or jaw) due to an accident or medical condition such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and osteogenesis imperfect (brittle bone disease).
    • Neurologic conditions such as seizures and central nervous system disorders such as stroke.

    We Love What We Do

At Weaver and Stratton Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we truly believe in our mission to provide a healthy and beautiful smile to your child at every stage of life and to help them live a happy, healthy, and fulfilling future as an adult.

We recognize that each child is unique and deserves the best possible care; it is our job to determine exactly what each child needs and deliver that to the best of our ability. When working with children with special needs, we always prioritize how your child is feeling and make sure they are comfortable. By doing that, we ensure that every child is happy and healthy. • Orthodontics

Orthodontics is an important part of dental care. The diagnosis and treatment planning for orthodontic patients are often most successful when started at a young age. This is usually between the ages of 10-15 years old. Early orthodontic management improves long-term results by reducing the treatment duration; it also reduces the risk of having more complicated problems in the future due to poor tooth positionings, such as overcrowding of teeth, malocclusion (bad bite), or crooked teeth that cannot be treated by traditional fixed appliances.

Our pediatric dental care professionals are capable of monitoring your child’s teeth alignment from the moment they begin growing their first permanent teeth (typically around seven years old). From that information, we are able to best determine the time to begin orthodontic care to achieve the best results in the least amount of time. To schedule an orthodontic consult, please note that this service is only provided at the Orange Park and Julington Creek locations at this time.

    Traditional Metal Braces

In our office, we utilize traditional metal braces to correct our patient’s smiles. Traditional metal braces are orthodontic devices fitted to the teeth in order to achieve cosmetic and corrective changes in alignment and bite. Made from metallic materials, traditional braces exert a small amount of pressure on the teeth in order to gradually move them in a specific direction over time. Traditional metal braces are one of the most common treatments used for orthodontics, and the least expensive.

    Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

One of the most obvious benefits to your child is a beautiful smile that will last their lifetime. The American Association of Orthodontics reports that in addition to creating aesthetically pleasing smiles, treating children early in life can have other benefits as well, including:

    • Prevention of jaw misalignment and overcrowding, which could interfere with chewing and speech development
    • Retention of any healthy teeth that could have otherwise been lost due to oral hygiene or decay problems
    • Improved self-esteem, which can positively affect behavior and social performance
    • Improved facial appearance and profile

    The Process of Applying Braces

To begin the process of orthodontic treatment, your child must first visit us for an orthodontic evaluation; this should be performed by the age of seven (though we will typically perform this screening as a part of each six-month checkup).

During the evaluation, we will diagnose your child’s bite and determine the need for treatment, as well as an estimated duration for treatment completion. If it is determined that you would like your child to undergo orthodontic care, we will begin the process of applying braces.

    • Metal brackets are cemented to the front surface of each tooth.
    • These brackets are connected by a thin wire that is threaded through each bracket’s clasp.
    • As time passes, these teeth start gradually moving towards their predetermined positions under the pressure exerted by the orthodontic appliance until they form more desirable angles with the adjacent teeth.
    • The wire continues to exert pressure on the teeth for as long as it is in place, which usually ranges from six months to two years, depending on how much movement is needed.

A Personalized Path To A Perfect Smile

Are you looking for caring and knowledgeable pediatric professionals that are offering orthodontic treatment? Our practice is dedicated to providing our patients with the highest quality of care that is customized for your child’s unique orthodontic needs. We provide personalized attention throughout the treatment process, encouraging both patients and parents to become involved in the treatment by asking questions and getting excited about the orthodontic journey.

Your child’s smile is one of the first features people notice about them, so let our dental team help you give your child the beautiful smile they deserve! Call our office today to schedule their orthodontic evaluation today!

  • Pediatric Dentistry

Our pediatric office offers a variety of general treatments and preventative dental care services for children. We encourage you to bring your child in when their first tooth appears, usually around six months of age, but certainly no later than twelve months old. That way, they can then get used to coming for routine cleanings and examinations.

Your child’s teeth are very important to their health, not only cosmetically but also because they are necessary for chewing, speech development, and maintaining space in the mouth for permanent teeth, which start erupting around six and seven years of age.

When visiting our office, our experienced team will care for each patient as if they were our own. Every team member is committed to giving your child not only a welcoming environment but also the highest quality of pediatric care. Call our office to schedule your child’s dental visit.

    Pediatric Cleanings & Exams

Children are not simply born with healthy mouths; it takes regular, preventive dental care to keep their smiles in the best condition. From the very beginning, we encourage you to bring your child in for cleanings every six months, starting with the first tooth.

    • During these cleanings, we will take care to gently brush and floss your child’s teeth.
    • After, we will conduct a full examination to determine if there are any issues with the health of their teeth, gums, or alignments of their bite.
    • By doing this, we know that proper oral care will become a lifelong habit and have the potential to benefit their health for a lifetime.

At the end of each appointment, we will inform you of any treatment needs and answer questions regarding those treatments. We make it a priority to provide you with the information you need to support your child in maintaining great dental hygiene at home.

    Professional Athletic Mouthguards

Athletic mouthguards are important for any child with high activity, especially if they are playing sports. According to the American Dental Association, one out of five children will have some kind of sports-related dental injury by the time they’re old enough for high school sports teams. A mouthguard can help protect against injuries to the teeth, jaw, and soft oral tissues.

A professional mouthguard is one that has been customized to the child’s teeth and designed by a dental professional. A custom-made mouthguard offers more protection than a store-bought, do-it-yourself alternative. This is because they tightly fit the teeth, leaving no room for the teeth or jaw to shift or become altered due to impact. Our office provides custom-made professional athletic mouthguards that are thick enough to protect your child’s smile and prevent the occurrence of emergency injuries.

For an appointment to have a professional mouthguard created for your child, please give our office a call today.

    Wisdom Teeth Removal

The third molars, otherwise known as wisdom teeth, are located in the four back corners of the mouth and can usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25 years of age. In some cases, however, they can also start to come in much earlier. We recommend removing these teeth as soon as they begin to develop because this can prevent problems in the future, such as the following:

    • Impaction
    • Cyst development
    • Tooth decay
    • Damage to other teeth

The most common reason to remove children’s wisdom teeth is usually due to the limited space in their mouth. Since they often don’t have enough room to grow in properly, they will emerge at an angle or get stuck as other teeth erupt. The removal process typically proceeds as follows:

    • The precise location of the wisdom tooth or teeth is found on an x-ray.
    • Once we locate the tooth, we plan for surgery.
    • After supplying adequate local anesthetic to keep your child comfortable, we will create a small incision over the gum tissue.
    • The tooth is removed through the incision and sutured closed for healing.
Our office does not perform this procedure; however, we are able to provide oral surgeon referrals when treatment is needed.

We want to foster open communication so that you feel comfortable with the care your child is receiving and understand the need for any treatment.
